Lights, camera, ACTION! Drive-In movies are not a thing of the past, in fact they’re alive and well in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey! Looking to plan a road trip, love buttery popcorn, syrupy sweet fountain soda and movies? Pack up the kids and head to the Drive-In. Read on to find out about our top three Drive-In picks in PA and NJ!
 
Shankweiler’s Drive-In is one of the oldest operating Drive-In theaters in the country. Wilson Shankweiler opened Pennsylvania’s 1st Drive-in, the 2nd Drive-in to open in America, in Orefield, Pennsylvania, on April 15th, 1934. For years, people parked their cars on the four-acre lot, passing their summer evenings in the glow of the movie screen and this year Shankweiler’s opened it’s doors to welcome their 82nd Drive-In movie season. Located in Whitehall PA Shankweilers is well worth the hour drive to enjoy a piece of the good old days!
 
Becky’s has been voted “Best Drive-In Theater” in the Lehigh Valley area in the Morning Call’s Readers Choice Awards every year since 2009. Becky’s was also recognized by being voted “The Best of the Best” in Showmanship by the Drive-In Theater Fan Club in 1996, and was also included in the New York Times “10 Drive-Ins Worth a Detour” by Don and Susan Sanders in 2002. In addition to their extensive concession stand, Becky’s offers trackless fire engine rides and a moon-bounce before the features begin!
 
The Delsea Drive-In was built in 1949, closed in 1987 and reopened in 2004. Located in Vineland New Jersey, the Delsea is New Jersey’s ONLY Drive-In movie theater. This recently renovated open air theater offers modern technologies and an extensive concession stand. Shrimp with brown rice, low carb whole wheat wraps, eggplant parmesan, stir fry asparagus, gluten free and Atkins diet options are offered in addition to the usual popcorn and soft pretzel Drive-In staples. Well worth the drive, the Delsea Drive-In is sure to please the most discerning movie goer and foodie.
 
There is nothing more American and more iconic than the feel of a 50s Drive-In movie. Enjoy!
